Hear music featuring all kinds of keyboards: church organ, piano (processed, prepared, Disklavier), accordion, harpsichord, and various electronics by New York composer Kelly Moran, Canadian composer Kara-Lis Coverdale, and German-Swiss duo Grandbrothers.
There’s music from New York composer and multi-instrumentalist Kelly Moran, who built her reputation on writing for the prepared piano. In recent years, Kelly has done straight-up piano music, and duets with a Disklavier. For her upcoming release, Don’t Trust Mirrors, (due October 1) she’s put all of those keyboards together, as on “Echo in the Field”, a work for piano, prepared piano, and electronics. Then, listen to the latest from Montreal-based Kara-Lis Coverdale, involving pianos, subtle electronic processing, slowness, and space.
Listen also to German-Swiss duo Grandbrothers, who sample, treat, and process live sounds sourced from the insides and outsides of our piano into inventive electronic dancey minimalism. Also, listen to the sampled harpsichords - blurred and sewn back together with electronic textures - by Polish composer Jacaszek. There’s dramatic pipe-organ from Swedish singer, keyboardist and songwriter Anna von Hausswolff, and her 2012 album Ceremony. Plus, music by London-based composer Jon Opstad for Disklavier with acoustic preparation techniques, which use the instrument percussively and add electronic processing.
