#5060, Music Out of the Darkness

New Sounds | Oct 9, 2025

Listen to music from Cuban-Chinese artist, composer, and cellist SUUVI’s recording, Dark Therapy, a work for ambient cello and electronics which reflects SUUVI’s deep study of trauma recovery, brain science, and ancient meditation practices—including extended darkness exposure. Developed in collaboration with neuroscientists and consciousness researchers, the eight-part auditory experience is designed to regulate nervous system patterns and evoke altered states of awareness. Hear selections from that work and experience an immersive performance of  SUUVI: Dark Therapy at National Sawdust on Oct. 10.

Then, from drummer/composer David T. Little’s Dark Hymnal, listen to a kind of instrumental epilogue, and what the composer describes as “a series of meditations derived from his opera Black Lodge”. Hear selections that may feel simultaneously lulling and disconcerting, comforting and perplexing, and even at times, frightening; truly a work with its spiritual roots in the world of Black Lodge, and “best experienced in full, possibly in the dark”. Listen to music by Angélica Negrón about longing for connection and above all holding on to the possibility of seeing light in darkness. There’s also composer/performer Molly Joyce’s work of storytelling and excerpts from interviews with others on the disability spectrum about darkness. Plus, listen to expansive and lush music for cello and electronics by NYC-based cellist and composer MIZU, from the album, Distant Intervals. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
