#5122, With Shane Parish, 'Autechre Guitar', In-Studio

Athens, GA-based guitarist Shane Parish is the leader of the avant-rock band Ahleuchatistas, a member of the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, and a fingerstyle soloist who listens broadly to jazz, folk, blues, improvised music, and IDM. He’s also a composer, improviser, collaborator, and educator whose “work focuses on the translation of music across traditions, canons, and technologies”, (ShaneParish.com). Parish has long experimented with the various sounds that an acoustic guitar makes, using all kinds of tunings and preparations with the aim of exploring an entire realm of timbre. His latest feat is solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar versions of pieces by the English electronic music duo Autechre, in a collection called Autechre Guitar.

While the structures may be condensed as on his version of "Maetl", Parish speaks about having taken great pains not to slavishly transcribe note-for-note. Rather, he’ll glean melodies from the percussive lines, reduce melodies, pick out harmonies, and utterly transform these tunes. Shane Parish plays some of these improbable arrangements in person, in the studio. Listen to a folk-blues pastoral and an almost Fahey-esque arrangement of Autchre’s “Slip”, along with “Eutow”, one of the first arrangements that Parish finished when he began tackling this repertoire. Also, hear his adaptation of “Yulquen”, another of Autechre’s gorgeous and hypnotic electronic works. Plus, there’s an unexpected translation of The Sugarcubes song, “Birthday” in which Parish unlocks secret rooms of melody. - Caryn Havlik
