#5134, New Releases, April 2026

New Sounds | Apr 29

Hear new work from the Chicago-based saxophone quartet known as ~Nois, who are making music on the boundary of contemporary classical music and improvisation. (Their bio blurb sentence is way better: "Think *NSYNC meets John Zorn and you are probably close to the right thing..."). Also, there’s new music from Swedish-based singer Alicia Lázaro; Polish cellist Dobrawa Czocher; and the duo called Bach Artillerie. Plus, a remembrance of composer and pianist Michael Harrison.

Composer and pianist Michael Harrison, who passed away earlier this April, was a master of using just intonation, a system of alternate tuning which he learned from his studies of Indian raga, and his association with groundbreaking composer La Monte Young. As a rembrance, listen to the voices of Roomful of Teeth from the work Just Constellation by Michael Harrison, along with music from Evening Light, the first chapter of the series Raga Cycle featuring collaborations with a range of musicians from around the world. Sample some of Harrison's music co-composed with vocalist Ina Filip (originally from Brazil and based in Québec), which blends Indian classical ragas with lyrical and minimalist piano (Cantaloupe Music).

There's new music from Spanish-born, Swedish-based singer and composer Alicia Lázaro, who shapes piano, voice, and electronics into a work called Litae, subtitled "[prayer]", on her album There is no end to anything round. [Wikipedia noteΛιταί were personifications of prayers offered up in repentance and were ministers of the god Zeus]. Listen also to new work by Polish cellist and composer Dobrawa Czocher from her record, State of Matter. Also, there’s music from the duo called Bach Artillerie who are keyboardist/composer Curt Sydnor and drummer/composer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof). Hear one of the canons from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations reimagined and arranged for live synthesizers and drums. - Caryn Havlik
