New Sounds | May 24, 2010
New Sounds surveys Europe's recent improvised music scene. Two of its practitioners have a rich history as jazz instrumentalists as well as composers who work in film music: French saxophonist and clarinetist Louis Sclavis, who is heard in his intoxicating Suite Africaine; and Italian composer and arranger Antonio Pizzimenti, who is represented by Atlante, a collection of pieces for keyboard and percussion which draw on an international smorgasbord of styles (Celtic, African, and Italian folk music, among others). We also hear bass innovator Eberhard Weber's Endless Days, an ECM CD featuring a bass/reeds/keyboards/drums combo that weaves haunting, hypnotic musical narratives that are elusive yet majestic in power.
