#2040: Program #2040

New Sounds | May 24, 2010
Host John Schaefer presents music for solo strings, with and without voice. We hear Swiss violinist and ECM artist Paul Giger in two cuts which explore the nexus between early music, improvisation and modern composition. Composer-violinist Michael Galasso has been similarly prolific on ECM as we hear in the hypnotic, Baroque disc, Scenes. Yo-Yo Ma is heard in Mark O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz, a tune originally written for three instruments, and featuring double stops and drones, but sounds perfectly natural in a solo arrangement. Also on the program are selections by Phil Kline, Iva Bittova, Donna McKevitt and Derek Jarman.
