The Art Ensemble of Chicago enjoyed a reputation as the most influential avant-garde jazz group of the 1970s and '80s. The ensemble helped pioneer the fusion of jazz with European art music and indigenous African music, as several retrospective CDs from this era indicate. Along with his work with AEC, Lester Bowie formed Brass Fantasy, an all-brass, postmodern big band that became his most popular vehicle. And Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek (pictured) pioneered an icy tone and liberal use of space that was perfect for the ECM sound, as selections from that label reveal.
