New Sounds | May 24, 2010
New music featuring the bass clarinet is the subject of this New Sounds program. Hear from Australian composer Nigel Westlake, whose piece, “Onomatopoeia”, is for bass clarinet and digital delay. Also, there’s music from France by clarinetist, sax player and composer Michel Portal, with a little world music flavor, and a number of acoustic and electronic sounds mixed in. Plus, there’s a work featuring Evan Ziporyn on the bass clarinet in “What She Saw there”. Ziporyn, a composer himself and one of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, is joined by two marimba players as they imitate sounds inspired by Balinese percussion music.
