New Sounds | May 24, 2010
New Sounds travels to some far corners of the globe for tonight's program, including Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where the ensemble Egschiglen was founded. This group of vocal improvisers relies on Tuvan throat singing, a technique found in Asian cultures in which two, and sometimes three, distinct tones are produced simultaneously. No less fascinating is the Finnish-Swedish group Hedningarna ("The Heathens"), who play folk rock with flying fiddles, screeching bagpipes, grinding hurdy-gurdy, and newly invented instruments. Plus Andy Haas and David Corter unload some good vibrations on the Aboriginal didgeridoo to round out this program.
