What a Beautiful Morning

"What A Beautiful Morning" is an hour-long tribute to the revolutionary Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!, originally created to mark the 50th anniversity of its Broadway premiere. Oklahoma! was presented to the world at the St.James Theatre on March 31, 1943, and its unprecedented combination of drama, song and dance have made it a landmark in the history of musical theater -- one of the most influential shows of all time.

Hosted by Shirley Jones, who starred in the film version, this special explores the genesis, history and influence of Oklahoma! through interviews with original Broadway cast members, including Celeste Holme, the first Ado Annie; choreographer Agnes DeMille; critic Frank Rich; composer Stephen Sondheim; and many others. The program also features music from original cast recordings, as well as unusual renditions of the show's many hit numbers taken from its rich performance history.
