New NJ Gov. Expected to Shake-Up Port Authority Board

When Republican Governor Elect Chris Christie takes office next month the impact will go well beyond New Jersey's borders. WNYC's Bob Hennelly explains.

REPORTER: For eight years, it's been up to a Democratic New Jersey Governor to pick half of the Port Authority's Commissioners and its chairman. Now it will be up to Governor Elect Christie to sign off on three of his state's six Port Commissioners and the Chairman.

The current chairman, Anthony Coscia, appointed by Governor McGreevey, is expected to assume a spot on Amtrak's Board in the New Year. The board shake-up comes as the bi-state authority that controls the region's airports and port facilities faces a significant long term financial challenge.

It has to continue to fund critical transportation projects like the second trans-Hudson rail tunnel it's building in the midst of a stubborn economic downturn where the Authority's revenues remain soft. For WNYC I am Bob Hennelly.
