Final Debate in New Jersey Gubernatorial Contest

New York, NY —

Tonight in Newark, Governor John Corzine debates Republican Chris Christie and Independent Chris Daggett for the last time before voters head to the polls. WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports:

Tonight's public radio debate comes as the latest polling shows Independent Chris Daggett on an upswing, now getting 20 percent of voters sampled, while Christie and Corzine are locked in a statistical dead heat.

Daggett is a former Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner under Republican Governor Tom Kean. And he's supported by the state's Sierra Club, which points to its success in electing an independent Governor in Maine as proof it can be done. But both Republican and Democratic parties have county and municipal committee structures that have well established track records in getting out the vote. For WNYC in New Jersey, I'm Bob Hennelly.
