Rangel's Seat Challenged by Former Staffer

Embattled Harlem Congressman Charles Rangel will face a challenge from a former staffer in next year's election. Vincent Morgan is a banker who once worked for Rangel as a campaign director. Morgan announced his plans to run for Rangel's seat yesterday.

Rangel is the chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee that sets tax policy. He's held his seat since 1970 when he defeated the legendary Adam Clayton Powell, Junior.

Rangel is now under investigation by two House ethics subcommittees looking into his personal taxes and finances. In August, Rangel revealed that he failed to report $500,000 in assets on a 2007 financial disclosure form. Last week, Democrats defeated an effort by House Republicans to remove Rangel from his chairmanship until the ethics investigations have finished.

Vincent Morgan is a native of Chicago. He worked as a special assistant to Congressman Rangel and ran his re-election campaign in 2002.
