Councilman: After School Programs Prevent Youth Violence

New York, NY —

A Queens councilman says after-school programs can help prevent shootings like the one that killed a 13-year-old boy over the weekend. According to Leroy Comrie, who represents the area in which Kevin Miller was killed, youth unemployment is a major problem. And he says many kids leave school hours before their parents come home.

Comrie: We have too many young people in the street. There's not one city-owned community center in any of those areas. So its important that the city understand that and dedicate resources to that.

REPORTER: The 13-year-old was shot by a stray bullet. Police say a 16-year-old boy has been charged with second degree murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
