Bloomberg Spends Much More in Third Bid

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

According to the latest filings, Mayor Bloomberg is spending a lot more in his third bid for the City's top job than he did in his two previous campaigns. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.

REPORTER: With a month to go, the mayor has spent a record $65 million. His Democratic opponent Bill Thompson has raised $8 million. That's not much more than the $7 million the Bloomberg campaign has spent on office supplies alone, according to the Campaign Finance Board. A third of the mayor's total spending, $22 million, has gone to TV advertizing, and he's spent $10 million on direct mail. The mayor has opted out of the city's public campaign finance program, but under the law he must disclose all of his campaign spending. In 2005, the Mayor spent $80 million on his campaign. That works out to about a hundred dollars a vote.

For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
