Paterson: I’m Focused on Budget, Not Election
New York, NY —
New York State's deficit has ballooned to three billion dollars. Governor Paterson broke the news to legislative leaders during a special meeting to talk about the budget shortfall. He says lawmakers must take quick action, to avoid a bond rating downgrade. Paterson told reporters after the meeting the conversation needs to be about the budget, and not about his re-election plans:
Patterson: What I was doing here today is to focus on the deficit problems right here in NY and to try to not let the politics coming from where ever to interfere with the fact that I have got to keep New York out of the conditions I described in this meeting.
Paterson did not outline any proposed cuts, saying unions would use the suggestions to attack him. No date was set for a special legislative session, either.
