DC 37 Local Placed Under Trusteeship

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

A union local representing 5,000 secretaries at New York City colleges has been placed under the control of a trustee after its president was ousted for bad investments and allegations of reckless spending. District Council 37 of the American Federal of State, County and Municipal Employees says it placed Local 2054 into trusteeship after its investments lost $1 million in 14 months. Local President Colleen Carew-Rogers was also voted out of office Tuesday over a variety of complaints. Among them was a charge that she used union funds to buy a $41,000 Cadillac for her retiring predecessor, and then threw her a $30,000 going-away party. A lawyer for the ousted boss says she was removed wrongfully and was innocent of the allegations against her.
