Diaz Handily Wins Bronx BP

Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. is the next Bronx borough president.

According to unofficial returns, Diaz won yesterday's special election with 87 percent of the vote, soundly beating rival Anthony Ribustello.

The voter turnout, about 33,000 people, was less than five percent of the Bronx's registered voters.

Diaz is a veteran Democratic assemblyman and the son of a prominent state senator.

Diaz will serve through the end of the year, the remainder of the term of Adolfo Carrion, who left to become President Obama's director of urban affairs. Diaz will have to run for a full term in November.
