Queens DA Praises Mortgage Fraud Bill

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown is praising Senator Chuck Schumer for his mortgage fraud bill. The measure would allocate $100 million to help district attorneys crack down on unscrupulous mortgage lenders.

BROWN: It's gonna allow local prosecutors like myself and my colleagues to more effectively prosecute those who would engage in mortgage fraud and rip off the consuming public.

REPORTER: Brown says right now the Queens Economic Crimes Bureau is trying to handle mortgage fraud cases in addition to their own workload. Schumer's bill would provide aid to prosecutors from coast to coast. Schumer already allocated nearly $900,000 for mortgage fraud investigators in Brooklyn. Citing FBI statistics, the Senator says mortgage fraud is a national matter that costs homeowners up to $6 billion a year.
