NY Senators Urge Repeal of Federal Gun Records Policy

New York, NY —

New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer are calling for the repeal of federal laws that they say hamper efforts to investigate gun crimes.

When she served in the House, Gillibrand usually voted in favor of gun rights, but she says her views have evolved since meeting the families of gun victims like Nyasia Pryear-Yard the 17-year-old who was fatally shot in a Brooklyn dance club this January.

GILLIBRAND: I looked into her mother's eyes, and she talked to me about the pain and horror of losing her child to gun violence and when I've met with other mothers who have lost their children. Those experiences are extraordinarily difficult and really create the urgency for why we need to work on solutions.

REPORTER: Gillibrand and Schumer say they will work this session to repeal the federal policy that now requires records of gun background checks be destroyed after 24 hours.

Mayor Bloomberg applauded the senators' position and said more than 350 mayors also support repealing the law.
