Kerrey Calls Occupation of New School Building Illegal

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Friday's occupation of a New School building by demonstrators was "illegal" and "not a legitimate protest," according to university president Bob Kerrey. He told the New York Post on Saturday that he won't step down from his job, a demand of protestors from the group the New School in Exile, which objects to the former Senator's support for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and to the fact that he doesn't have a doctoral degree. The group also wants students to have a role in administrative and budgeting decisions Kerrey says he called the NYPD himself on Friday and asked that protestors who broke into the building near Union Square be taken out. 19 people are charged with trespassing, and three others were arrested outside. Protestors say officers used unnecessary force in the arrests outside. More protestors were arrested Saturday as they tried to march to Kerrey's house.
