City Clinics Look Forward to Stimulus Funds

The first wave of federal stimulus money is starting to work its way into community health clinics around the state. WNYC’s Fred Mogul has more.

REPORTER: $25 million for more than clinic networks around the state will disappear pretty quickly. Elizabeth Howell of the Community Healthcare Network says the half-million dollars she expects to get will help add 8 to 9 doctors and other staff members.

HOWELL: We will be able to see at a minimum 3,000 new patients. And with future stimulus dollars, there might be an opportunity to grow even further.

REPORTER: Howell’s 9-clinic network in the city serves about 30-thousand patients. In the coming months, more ‘fast-track’ federal funding for building and equipment expansions should arrive. Howell expects those grants to be larger – and more competitive to get.
