Chinatown Fire Kills 1, Injures 28

Fire ripped through an old six-story apartment building in the heart of Chinatown early this morning, killing one person, and injuring 28. Four building residents were seriously injured in the blaze, including three who jumped from windows on the fifth and sixth floors. Eight firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The Red Cross says 60 families - more than 200 people - were evacuated from the building and two others nearby and taken to a shelter. Strong winds fanned the flames as 180 firefighters battled the blaze in bitter cold, causing water to freeze around the building at 22 James Street.

Last month, a Buildings Department inspection found "defective/exposed" electrical wiring in ceiling fixtures throughout the building and violations were served.
