Seizing Election Momentum, Volunteers Organize

About 600 supporters of President Obama -- and others hoping to volunteer -- gathered near Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn yesterday. The event was billed as the "Continue the Change Service Fair." WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.

REPORTER: The event was organized by members of Brooklyn for Barack. Although their candidate won, they think there's still plenty of leftover energy out there just waiting to be tapped. So they brought together 65 nonprofits and service groups who can use the extra volunteers. Sandra Henry is with iMentor, which connects adults with young people looking for role models. She was overwhelmed by the turnout, and said the president's call to service certainly helped.

HENRY: We got about 50 people in one volunteer event. Which is amazing. Really amazing. The most, sometimes I hope to get double digits.

REPORTER: Other groups that recruited included Oxfam, NARAL Pro Choice New York, and Gallop NYC, which teaches people with disabilities how to ride horses. Organizers of the Service Fair say that based on yesterday's turnout, they'll be back with similar events. For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
