Deciding the Structure of Your Local Government

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Residents of Nassau, Suffolk, and counties across New York State may soon have an opportunity to vote on the structure of their local governments.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says the current system with special districts is inefficient and outdated.

CUOMO: It was set up decades ago for a different state at different times with different technology with different populations with different demographics, why not reorganize.

REPORTER: Rather than raising taxes, Cuomo wants to give county governments the power to consolidate their districts.

He spoke today at the annual New York State Association of Counties' Legislative Conference.
