City Announces New Construction Safety Measures

A $4 million analysis of construction safety is complete, and officials say it'll change the way high-risk construction is regulated and carried out in New York City. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has more.

REPORTER: The city commissioned the safety analysis back in April after several high profile accidents, including the east side crane collapse that killed seven people. The construction experts visited 600 job sites, inspected hundreds of cranes, and held a dozen meetings with the construction industry. They were charged with looking at high risk work which includes crane, excavation and concrete operations.

The recommendations include everything from tracking crane parts, to better training inspectors, to requiring a more rigorous review of plans. The city says all 41 recommendations will be implemented in the coming months. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
