City Council Releases More Proposed Spending Cuts

The City Council's Budget Negotiating Team has released nearly $500 million in additional spending reduction proposals in an effort to minimize the impact of the fiscal crisis. The cuts would reduce the 2009 budget by nearly $170 million, and the budget for Fiscal Year 2010 by $325 million. Council Speaker Christine Quinn says the proposed reductions are designed to eliminate redundancies and allow agencies to do more with less. One proposal would reduce the NYPD’s recruitment advertising budget by $3.5 million dollars next year and by $7 million in 2010. The plan also cuts nearly $75 million from the Department of Education budget, but council supporters say it won't take money away from the classroom.
