Paterson Calls for Privatizion of State Assets

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Governor Paterson wants proposals for private contractors to lease state assets like highways, bridges and the lottery. He says it could trim costs and generate revenue.

Carol Kellerman, president of the citizens budget commission, says it's a good plan, especially if it works like the city's partnership with a company called Cemusa.

KELLERMAN: We're getting really beautiful new bus stop shelters. Cemusa is not only building them but has a long term contract to maintain them, and they pay New York City almost a billion dollars a year and in return they get revenue from the advertising on the bus stops.

REPORTER: The Governor is creating a commission to look into similar partnerships for the state. He's seeking proposals from private contractors by January.
