Call for Blood Donations

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The city’s supply of blood is running low. The executive director of the New York Blood Center Rob Purvis says the region's stores have dropped below the five-day safety level mark.

Purvis explains that the shortage came about after several blood drives were canceled last week due to the heat and the flooding in the midwest interrupted the supply of blood from out of state.

Only a tiny minority--about two percent--of New Yorkers donate blood.

Those interesting in donating can call 1-800-933-BLOOD or visit nybloodcenter.org.

Be alert for scams. WNYC never asks for nor accepts money for coverage or interviews. Anyone making such a request does not represent WNYC.
