Severe Weather Causes Traffic Problems and Power Outages

Thunderstorms swamped highways, shut down some subways and backed up airline traffic around the New York metro area Saturday night. The weather briefly knocked out power to Nassau County's 911 system and left thousands of homes and businesses in the dark.
Departing flights ran more than four hours late at John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports. Conditions were normal by Sunday morning.
The downpours cut off service on a stretch of the subway system's F line in Queens. Parts of numerous streets and highways closed because of flooding, and New York City firefighters say at least one car was submerged.
Several hundred Con Edison customers in Queens, Brooklyn and Westchester were still without electricity Sunday afternoon due to downed power lines. Utility officials say power should be restored by 9 Sunday night.
