Paterson Condemns Bell Protests

New York, NY —

Gov. David Paterson said he'll let federal officials and the NYPD finish up their investigations into the fatal shooting of Sean Bell before implementing his own changes, like the use of a special prosecutor.

Paterson says one isn't needed in every case where police are charged.

PATERSON: Not in all of them. Because you have very committed prosecutors who understand that in certain situations, that they have to come in and prosecute members of law enforcement.

REPORTER: Paterson made his remarks as the Reverend Al Sharpton and members of Bell's family stood by.

The governor said he couldn't condone the civil disobedience committed in Bell's name earlier this week, but that he understood why they resorted to it.
