Grocers Stock Up for Long Weekend

Employees at the Hunts Point produce market are working overtime to make sure millions of pounds of fruits and vegetables get to stores before Thanksgiving.

REPORTER: Myra Gordon is the Bronx market's Executive Administrative Director. Standing in one of the many warehouses, she pointed to boxes of produce, stacked floor to ceiling - ready for distribution.

GORDON: It's amazing. This place will be empty. Other than the hardware of the industry - potatoes, onions, apples, oranges. But broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, all the berry fruits, out.

REPORTER: Hunts Point supplies 60% of all the fruits and vegetables eaten in the New York metropolitan area. The market will re-open on Sunday - another reason there's a spike in buying. All the stores are scrambling to stock up for the week ahead.
