Homelessness Among Veterens on the Rise in New York

According to a new report the number of homeless veterans in the state increased dramatically between 2005 and 2006, up from 12,700 to over 21,000.

REPORTER: Senator Charles Schumer says veterans of the war in Iraq are becoming homeless much faster than they did after the Vietnam war.

SCHUMER: Obviously housing is more expensive than it used to be. Second, large number of veterans come back home with mental disorders such as PTSD. Third, many veterans are older, because such a high proportion of veterans are guard and reserve.

REPORTER: Schumer is pushing for $300 million in federal funding - to provide housing vouchers for veterans, and help them re-enter society.
