Public Hearings on Fare Hike Continue

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The MTA held hearings on Long Island and in Queens last night about proposed fare hikes. Gene Russianoff, of the Straphanger's Campaign, spoke at the Queens hearing. He says the state and city have the matching funds that the MTA needs.

Russianoff says New York could easily fix the problem by increasing the agency's reimbursement for school children and taking more money out its general fund. MTA officials have said they need the extra money to close projected budget gaps beginning in 2009.

Another public hearing is scheduled for 6 pm tonight at the Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan.
