Injured Veterans to Run NYC Marathon

Among those who plan to compete in the New York City ING Marathon are injured veterans from the Achilles Track Club Team of Wounded Athletes.

REPORTER: Rico Roman sustained on open wound fracture on his knee while serving his third tour of duty in Iraq. His wife Natalie Roman explained how training for the race has helped Rico's recovery.

ROMAN: He hasn't been able to ride a bike or run anymore, and it has put him down a lot. So this is just kind of to bring him up and let him realize, you know, there is more out there. Even though you have your injury, you still can be an athlete.

REPORTER: The couple's children, 5-year-old Juliet, and 4-year-old Raul will also be watching the race. The 26.2 mile, 5-borough trek kicks off tomorrow at 6am in Staten Island and continues through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx before finishing up in Central Park. Rico Roman will be one of an expected 38-thousand runners.
