Street Named for Jerry Orbach

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

53rd Street and 8th Avenue has been re-named for actor Jerry Orbach. The "Law and Order" star lived on that corner for more than 25 years, and he worked in the city for much of his life.

REPORTER: Ed Shrin directed Orbach on Broadway and on "Law and Order." He says it's fitting that the street now bears the actors name.

SHRIN: Everyone knew him and everyone considered him Mr. New York. I don't think anyone is identified more fully with New York than Jerry and he deserves it. He's a legend in this town. He was a triple threat - he did television, he did films, wonderful films, and he was a Broadway musical star.

REPORTER: Orbach's wife, Elaine, fought for months to get that particular street named for him because of all the time they spent there. Community Board 5 finally approved the honor.
