Budget Woes in Newark

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Newark Mayor Corey Booker is following through with his plan to eliminate 200 city jobs to balance the budget. He submitted paperwork yesterday to make the change.

Newark faces a $180 million budget gap and Booker says the elimination will save more than $12 million and prevent a tax increase next year. Newark has worked to reduce its payroll this summer - 203 city employees accepted a voluntary buyout and City Hall eliminated another 95 unfilled personnel positions. New Jersey has 30 days to approve Newark's plan, reject it or ask for changes.

Vulnerable employees will be notified next month with layoffs planned for mid-November.
