New Questions About Construction at WTC Site Following Fire

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

There are new questions about construction at the former Duetsche Bank Building following Saturday’s fire. The building had been plagued with citations before the fire, and received another violation for failure to maintain the standpipe system after investigators made the discovery.

Reporter: What is perhaps most perplexing is that 13O Liberty Street, is the site WAS supposedly one of the most regulated projects in City history, being monitored by multiple, city, state and federal agencies.

Later today, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and other politicians will join technical experts to question officials about the status of the site in a closed door session, followed by a public hearing. Lower Manhattan Councilman Allen Gerson, wants to make sure the city improves the way is disseminates information to residents in the event of another emergency.

Gerson said residents were kept in the dark for hours without information on how to reduce any potential environmental risks to themselves or their families. He says he wants to see something like a reverse 911 system that offers coherent real time information to vulnerable households from city emergency officials.
