Newark Activists Say New Surveillance Technology Won’t Stop Crime

Newark is increasing its neighborhood surveillance by adding 50 new security cameras to the 72 it has in place and on the way. It will also install a system that can hear gunshots and swivel cameras toward their source.

REPORTER: But community activist Donna Jackson says high tech investments won't get to the underlying social conditions that set the stage for the recent triple shooting that has garnered national attention.

JACKSON: We're not even talking about the murders continue to happen on a day to day basis in this city. It is like these 3 children, and God knows it was a heinous crime, it's like these 3 were murdered and nothing' else is happening in this city. And I am tired of people actin like nothing' else happened here.

REPORTER: The money for the high tech crime detection initiative is being raised by the newly created Newark Community Foundation.
