Police Say Cop Shooting Suspects Made Incriminating Statements
New York, NY —
Two Queens men accused of shooting two city police officers have made incriminating statements, according to prosecutors.
Robert Ellis and Dexter Bostic were ordered held without bail Friday at a Brooklyn hearing. The two did not enter a plea. The suspects, who were both captured in Pennsylvania, face charges of attempted murder, assault on a police officer and other crimes. If convicted, they face life in prison.
A third suspect, Lee Woods, is also being held without bail. Authorities say Bostic and Ellis, both ex-convicts, were riding in a stolen SUV driven by Woods, when police pulled the vehicle over early Monday morning in Brooklyn. As officers Herman Yan and Russel Timoshenko approached either side of the vehicle, police say Bostic shot Timoshenko in the face, while Ellis allegedly fired on Yan.
Ellis' attorney says her client did not fire on the officer. Woods' lawyer says there's nothing in prosecutors' allegations that suggests Woods intended to harm the officers.
Officer Timoshenko, 23, remains in extremely critical condition. Yan, 26, was saved by his bullet-resistant vest and was released from the hospital Tuesday.
