Safety Lapses on Subway Tracks

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

City transit officials say recent spot checks of track work have uncovered 44 safety deficiencies. Deficiencies range from the improper set up of lanterns to inattentive flaggers, track workers responsible for warning crews of oncoming trains.

A spokesman for New York City Transit told the Times that none of the violations were considered flagrant but that some procedural changes were being considered as a result of the findings.

The safety audits were conducted at 60 work sites between May 9 and May 12. Two subway workers were killed while working on the tracks last month.
