Source of Chemical in Queens Water Remains a Mystery

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

City officials are still trying to determine how an industrial chemical found its way into the drinking water in parts of Queens. Inspectors have checked local dry cleaners and auto repair shops but have not discovered the source of contamination.

Department of Environmental Protection Deputy Commissioner Anne Canty says a faulty valve may be to blame for chemical discharge backing up into the water system.

Hydrants in the area are being flushed and the DEP expects the problem to be cleared up in a few days. In the meantime, health department officials say the water is safe to drink.
