New Technology for City’s Cabs

The Taxi and Limousine Commission is considering setting an October 1st deadline today for all city cabs to start installing new touch-screen monitors and other technology. But some drivers don't like the idea.

The systems, now being tested in 200 cabs, let passengers pay by credit card and get information from news to restaurant reviews. Officials say the credit-card option could translate to bigger tips and more fares, while a global positioning system will automate the required record-keeping.

But some drivers are concerned about the cost of the system and credit-card fees. And some worry the GPS would be used to track drivers' movements, though the taxi commission says it won't.
