Bloomberg Criticizes Gonzales on Guns

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Mayor Bloomberg is joining the growing attack on embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. The Sun reports that Bloomberg is criticizing a Department of Justice proposal which would make it a crime for police officers to use gun trace information for any other reason besides criminal investigation or prosecution.

In a letter to the attorney general, Bloomberg argued that law enforcement officers need this information to track gun sales and shouldn't have to lie about their purpose for it. A spokesman for the Justice Department says the goal of the measure is to ensure that the Justice Department remains consistent with the longstanding practice of the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco.
