59th Anniversary of Israel Commemorated

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

REPORTER: Mayor Bloomberg, this year's Grand Marshal of the Salute to Israel Parade, was joined the Mayor of Jerusalem during his march up 5th Avenue yesterday. Thousands of people gathered to watch the floats, which were partly sponsored by El Al Airlines and the J-Date Web site. Stanley Hochhauser has been the parade's Master Shofar blower for 8 years. The shofar is made from a ram's horn and is traditionally used in Jewish ceremonies.

HOCHHAUSER: The sounding of the shofar is to awaken all the Jewish people. To make them aware that the day is coming when we'll all be united. One whole people, all together.

REPORTER: The parade honors the establishment of Israel in May 1948. It is the single largest Jewish event in New York City.
