Auxiliary Cops Issued Vests

New York City will spend just over $3 million to equip its volunteer police force with the same bulletproof vests the NYPD uses. The move comes 2 weeks after auxiliary cops were killed by a gunman.

Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at the 6th Precinct yesterday, where Officers Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo worked. Pekearo was wearing a bulletproof vest, but it stopped only one of the several shots that struck him. City officials say it will take 9 months to outfit the force with the new vests.
