Kelly Suspends Officers Charged in Shooting

New York, NY —

In a show of disciplinary force, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, suspended the 3 officers charged in the shooting death of Sean Bell to the toughest financial penalty allowed under state law. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more on the NYPD's response to today's indictment.

Indicted officers Gescard Isnora, Mark Cooper and Michael Oliver will not receive any pay for the next 30 days, however under state labor law they must be put back on the payroll until the Department can file internal disciplinary charges or if they are convicted at their criminal trials. All five officers involved in the shooting no longer have their Department issued weapons and had been on administrative leave since the November shooting.

Officers Paul Headley and Michael Carey, who also fired that night were not indicted, but will be placed on modified assignment with pay, pending the Department's internal investigation.

In a statement, Commissioner Kelly pledged to increase the Department's efforts to engage communities of color throughout the City in police training and recruitment.
