Three Officers Indicted in Sean Bell Shooting
New York, NY —
A Queens Grand Jury has indicted 3 New York City police officers in the shooting death of Sean Bell.
REPORTER: The lawyers said Marc Cooper, Gescard Isnora and Michael Oliver had been indicted, but they did not know the exact charges. The three officers fired the most shots - Cooper, 4, Isnora, 11, and Oliver, 31.
City Councilman Charles Barron, who has long been a vocal critic of what he call racial profiling by the NYPD, says while the indictments are the first step in the fight for justice, they can never undo the anguish caused by the officers actions.
BARRON: First of all no amount of indictments can ever bring back Sean Bell. To his family, his mommy and daddy and two little children who are missing a father and to his fiancee who is without a husband. So there is no, anything we can do to really ease their pain.
REPORTER: The Reverend Al Sharpton was with Bell's friends and family at his Harlem National Action Network Headquarters and said they will all remain actively involved in the case as it goes to trial.
SHARPTON: We gonna fight to the end, till we get justice. Till Sean Bell's name and his family's name will stand in history as when there was a turn for the better in the criminal justice society.
REPORTER: Queens District Attorney Robert Brown is expected to announce the exact charges against the 3 officers at 11am on Monday.
