Metal Bat Ban Moves Forward

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

A bill to ban metal baseball bats from New York City high school games is moving forward. A council committee approved the ban yesterday after hearing emotional testimony from the father of a New Jersey boy who was badly injured when he was struck by a baseball hit off a metal bat.

Joseph Domalewski said the only thing his son did wrong was "pitch to a guy holding a metal bat." Last year, the ball struck his boy in the chest sending him into cardiac arrest. He was revived but spent several months in a coma. The bat ban bill will now go to the full council. Bat manufacturers say metal bats are no more dangerous than wooden ones.
