State of the Homeless Report Released

New Yorkers are supportive of those in need, according to the city's Department of Homeless Services. Eighty-eight percent of those surveyed in a new report say they favor the city's efforts to make sure the homeless have housing.

REPORTER: But Patrick Markee, with the Coalition For the Homeless, says the concern isn't if New Yorkers support reform. It's how the reforms are carried out.

MARKEE: The real issue in terms of the Bloomberg administration is whether they are executing the ideas well. And like with the school bus plan, the idea may not be a bad one but the execution often goes wrong.

REPORTER: Markee says the Coalition for the Homeless will release its annual State of the Homeless report today. He says there are now more homeless families as opposed to individuals in the shelter system than at any other point since the city has kept records. The number of families in shelters is up 17% from last year.
